Waves

 "Entropic wave"
Watercolor on paper, 15 Aug. 2005

The idea of a huge, deterministic force that we can't avoid is terrifying to me. I had nightmares in the past where huge dark clouds and fearsome wind storms wiped away everything around.

Before the wave of real tsunamis and disaster movies involving huge water masses moving over the land, the concept of a wave as an aesthetic form attracted me, no doubt influenced also by Okusai's paintings.

In the first painting, an organized body of life moves away from certain death. In the second, life (represented by the orange color) is trapped by the huge wave.
