Institution

"Institution"

Watercolor on paper, 21 Jan. 2006

Abstract art, if anything, is how metaphysics look like. How do you paint a business, a family, a government? This is a world made of relationships, qualities and synergies, and visual arts have many elements to play with to reflect them all.

Here we have a firm that mines natural resources, these represented by the dark mass at the bottom. Through complex sets of processes, administrations and internal flows, the institution provides a new product, a non-existing quality, represented at the top by the blue expansion.

Alhambra

"Alhambra"
Crayola, watercolor and ballpen, 14 March 2004

Alhambra is the city/palace/castle where the last of the Spanish Moorish kings lived until 1492, when he surrendered it to the Catholic Kings Fernando and Isabel. That very same year Columbus discovered America on a trip sponsored by the only court in Europe that believed in his vision, these same Catholic Kings.

I wanted to symbolize here the transition from Middle Ages into Modern Age, from the Ancient World to a New World, like bubbles of light and time flowing and drifting away, while the Alhambra enjoys a beautiful sunset.

This little painting is the initial work of my second active period, since I had only made but a few things since 1980. In a sense, this Alhambra symbolizes also the beginning of a new creative cycle.

The Healing Machine

"The Healing Machine"

Watercolor on paper, 5 May 2007

The efforts of many modern scientists focus in creating life in their laboratories, build artificial intelligence, in tangling even with the mysteries of consciousness and awareness, concepts for which we don't even have a clear definition yet. However, there's no way we can make a dishwasher think, no matter how big and complex we build it. Conciousness and intelligence belong to a different dimension: the realm of living beings, where bodies are built from within, not from outside.
It's necessary a quantum leap in our culture as a whole to be on the road to solve those mysteries... We may find at the end that these mysteries are far beyond our reach to solve... However, I can imagine a healing machine...

Waves

 "Outbound"
Watercolor on paper, 15 Aug. 2005

 "Entropic wave"
Watercolor on paper, 15 Aug. 2005

The idea of a huge, deterministic force that we can't avoid is terrifying to me. I had nightmares in the past where huge dark clouds and fearsome wind storms wiped away everything around.

Before the wave of real tsunamis and disaster movies involving huge water masses moving over the land, the concept of a wave as an aesthetic form attracted me, no doubt influenced also by Okusai's paintings.

In the first painting, an organized body of life moves away from certain death. In the second, life (represented by the orange color) is trapped by the huge wave.

Lt. Uhura

"Lt. Uhura, Star Trek"

Crayola, ink and pencil on paper, Jun 2009

Star Trek is a major milestone in TV shows. It caught the attention of millions
around SF and created a kind of everlasting cult. It was also pioneer in some special effects that seem unimpressive for today's standards, but that actually were a breakthrough in those days. I'm thankful to all who made it possible.

World Ready for Shipping

"World ready for shipping"

Watercolor on paper, 22 Jan 2006

Ambition has no limits. Some people have tried to claim possesion of the Moon or Mars, or even tried to sell it... Why not the world itself?

In this kit we present all the elements packed nicely: oceans, deserts, skies, volcanoes, prairies, crop fields...

It's for free, as long as you keep caring about it.

Flowing Trees

"Flowing Trees"

Washed ink, watercolor and pen on paper , 7 Jul 1978

Trees are unique creatures: They are the means for the earth to touch the sky- They flow from down below the ground into the air, spreading secret scents, standing like flames of life... drinking time old waters, breathing time old winds. They faithfully grow towards the sun, knowing that they will never reach it.

Dawn Dancers

"Dawn dancers"

Pen and watercolor on paper, 23 May 2009

Using complementary colors to enhance the contrast, I tried here to portrait a wonderful and peaceful winter dawn, where trees and sun again play together as in "Near and Far" (see January 5th) and a few other works. The colors were done first as background, then I draw the little bushes. The sun is just a profile, its light filling completely the air. The leaf-less plants are coming again to life after a long winter, Spring will soon be here ...

(Recommended sound track: "The roof is leaking", by Phil Collins, piano, and Eric Clapton, slide guitar)

Rainbow Ready for Shipping

"Rainbow ready for shipping"

Watercolor on paper, 10 Jun 2006

Practically anything in this world has a price, can be sold or bought if there are people willing enough. I made a short series where I tried to paint those things that we value most, and also tried to show ironically that actually not anything meaningful can be subject to commercial transaction. This paint shows a rainbow cut up, packed and ready to be shipped to a buyer.

Money is in our minds. It does exist because we believe in it. We need it. But we shouldn't be possessed by it to the extent to let it live our lives for us.

As most of my paintings, this one was made without previous sketching. Minimalism is also a goal in my work - Here I made only 18 brush strokes: one per rainbow color and two for each side of the cage.

Solar Wind

"Solar wind"

Washed ink, pen and watercolor on paper, 7 Sep 1977

Solar wind is the term to describe the radiation coming out of the sun that reaches the whole solar system. The concept of "solar wind" triggered my imagination: A sun in a windy sky with clouds and planets hanging close to each other. A beautiful vision...

Back in the 1977 I was a young unemployed student with a fondness to stain paper with "graphic notes" for future projects of larger size. These notes were made on any kind of paper I could get in small sizes. Many of my older paintings are square, like this 9 x 9 cm, the source being a note block pad.

Self-confident cell

"Self-confident cell"

Watercolor on paper, 7 Feb. 2007

Some Art forums are debating whether or not Art can change the world. There is reasoning for both. Art is an indication of what is going on in society. Nevertheless, some artists are able to foresee what lays ahead. And in a very few occasions, master pieces ("Aida" or "Guernika", for instance) can really have an influence on people, reinforcing some principles or incipient ideas (nationalism, movements against war, etc) that will shape the world in the long run. Art changes the future world since its influence grows with the passing of time (Michel Angelo, Bach, Beethoven, Van Gogh), as it allow us to see where are we coming from. Pre-historic cavern artists draw today as much interest as contemporary artists do, if not more.

Clint

"Clint"

Pencil and ink on paper, June 2009

Clint Eastwood is another of my favorite actors and directors. He creates cold, frequently hostile and lonesome environments in which warm-hearted people unfold simple, moving stories.

I wanted to reflect this double aspect with a characteristic trait of his work: The ever present side light effects. Even though he uses them a lot, it's never excessive; He knows how to use light effects to advantage, increasing the story's dramatism. For me, this is the real Clint: half light, half shadow. While just light alone depicts a tough attitude (as in the sketch above), the painting's warm colors tell a completely different story.

Leonardo's Selfportrait

Copy of Leonardo's "Selfportrait"
Pencil on paper, 29 Jan 2007

Leonardo da Vinci is one of my heroes, for the many things he did, and did right. As a tribute to his work, I wanted to reproduce his selfportrait, although with the eyes looking towards the spectator. I found the original a bit "cold", so I preferred also a warmer look, as a grand pa. We will never we thankful enough for everything he did; This is my way of thanking him.

Keep me in mind

"Keep me in mind"
Washed ink, watercolor and pen on paper, 5 Oct 1976

This is one of those paintings in which the conscious mind is switched off sometime during the process and you just keep painting while hardly seeing what you're doing... I remember that I was listening "Keep me in mind", a song by Loggins & Messina that I really liked in those days. Probably the fact that I had met a really nice girl that day had something to do with it...

The paintings from early days are not the best artworks in the world, as I was experimenting and learning from my own mistakes. I hoped becoming an illustrator or some kind of professional in graphics, but actually my ways went almost in the opposite direction (computers) which seemed more promising monetary wise. I keep painting today for pleasure, mostly abstract, still avoiding to copy from the real world if I can help it.

Closer than Reality

"Closer than Reality"
Ink, watercolor and pen on paper, 22 Jul 1977

I tried to portrait in several works the two dimensions of human experience, the external that we can perceive through our senses, and the internal, the realm of feelings and thoughts. The external we can describe and label thoroughly, even though we don't understand much of it. The internal we know well, but we have not enough words to express it completely. "Closer than reality" refers to that internal reality, much closer and familiar to us than the external one.

Girl with Pearl Earring

Version of "Girl with a Pearl Earring"

Pencil on paper, 26 Feb. 2005

Vermeer's "Girl with Pearl Earring" is one the most beautiful paintings ever made. Some consider it the "Monalisa of the North". It was a challenge to copy this portrait, since it has so many light efects. The earring is competing with the eyes of the model to become the center of attention, adding each other all their charm and beauty.

I modified slightly the scarf over the head to make it more ellegant.

Dream factory

"Dream factory"
Watercolor and pen on paper, 10 May 2009

Applying color and then drawing with pen has been one of my favorite techniques. I created here a dream-like atmosphere and then I added a few rare tools and objects. I liked the idea of some place where dreams were made, as an universal software, perhaps even hardware, for everyone to use.

In this technique, although I begin the work with a general idea and intention, I don't know the final result until is finished. In a sense, the picture is making it self on the way, demanding more color here or more weight there until there is nothing missing.

Ironic

"Ironic"

Watercolor and pen on paper, 5 Oct. 2004

I wanted to portrait here the weakness of man-made works: No matter how strong it may be, it's on the way to the junk pile. This image shows a structure reinforced to endure heavy weather, loads and work. However, rust has already started to work on it, and after some time there will be nothing left.
