Clint

"Clint"

Pencil and ink on paper, June 2009

Clint Eastwood is another of my favorite actors and directors. He creates cold, frequently hostile and lonesome environments in which warm-hearted people unfold simple, moving stories.

I wanted to reflect this double aspect with a characteristic trait of his work: The ever present side light effects. Even though he uses them a lot, it's never excessive; He knows how to use light effects to advantage, increasing the story's dramatism. For me, this is the real Clint: half light, half shadow. While just light alone depicts a tough attitude (as in the sketch above), the painting's warm colors tell a completely different story.
