Simoun

"Simoun"

Acrylic on paper, 21 Jun. 2006

Simoun is the strong desert wind, caused by extremes temperatures. When it comes, suddenly there are no references, no horizon, no air to breathe, no sounds anymore, just the loud thunder of the desert, in contrast to its loud silence. As a colossal eraser, it will wipe away foot prints, hats, glasses, seeds... anything that does not belong there. The Simoun will keep the desert eternally desert.

Skyline 1945

"Skyline 1945"

Watercolor on paper, 17 May 2007

Dawn over a ruined city hidden behind the river mist...  This was a very common image back in 1945 all throughout the world. Today is not so common, although economically and morally the ruin is even more extended. Fortunately, there's always the glory of a sun rising everyday...

The Wall

"The Wall"

Acrylic on paper, 5 Sept. 2008

A figure advances blindly to us, trespassing the surface of the painting itself, as if running out of a nightmare. Is the figure coming out of a dream to reality, or is the other way around?...

Organized chaos

"Organized chaos"

Watercolor on paper, 22 Aug. 2004

The tall, colored shape on the left symbolizes our world as we perceive it. The shapes on the right symbolize how we think the world, in positive-negative, good-bad, true-false modes that never add up to what the world really is.

When we feel the world as a whole, we understand it. When we think it in parts, we lose perspective and miss the meaning.

We tend to organize nature into rational models. Rarely do we succeed to complete the models, to the extent that some think that real world is made of exceptions to the rules.

Olympus Mons

"Olympus Mons"

Watercolor on paper, 27 Oct. 2005

Olympus Mons is the highest land feature in Mars. It's a huge inactive volcano measuring over 500 kms in diameter, its highest peaks reaching over 20 kms above the Martian ground level. It's worth a visit in GoogleEarth in the Mars view option, of course.

Pablo - Beyond Darkness

"Pablo"

Pencil on paper, Dec 2004

Pablo Bethencourt is an extraordinary man. Now a retired radio journalist, he is also a poet, a pianist and a composer. Pablo convinced me in early 2004 to move back to painting after more than 20 years of inactivity. As part of my reactivation I took some sketching clases in October and November 2004. This is one of the portraits I made before that year end. He chose also one of my paintings to be the cover of one of his poetry books.

Frozen flames

"Frozen flames"

Washed ink on paper, 3 May 2004

Creation creates order. Creation is an act of will, it has an intention. However, the final result may not be known from the start since it was never done before and there's no memory of it. The artist reflects on his/her work the vision of the finished work. In this sense, creation reflects a vision of the future. It works in the opposite direction of the arrow of time, that points to disorder and entropy. Creation is a neguentropic event.

Genesis

"Genesis"

Watercolor on paper, 25 Jun 2005

The dualist Greek philosophy, from which our modern science and world model emanates from, proposes that our material world is a degradation of a perfect, ideal one. This is a model in which reality is bound to entropy and death. However, another simultaneous and complementary model does exist: One in which creation is continuous, a present tense where life, consciousness and intelligence are three aspects of the same phemonemon- Genesis.

Back to Zero

"Back to Zero"

Watercolor on paper, 18 Jun 2006

Art is also the means for the future to announce itself. For some reason this image of a re-foundation came to my mind. Men in their world, women in theirs, both have the common task to rebuild a burnt home, the remains of a useless structure. Indeed this is just part of a cycle that repeats itself throughout History, in which progress is based upon. The future is here and now.

Debussy was here

"Dancing in the moonlight"

Washed ink, 19 Oct 1977

I saw once a tree swaying at midnight. The wind was warm, and sometimes strong enough to move it as if it was dancing under the moonlight, on a solitary stage. Since then is clear to me why Debussy or Beethoven were inspired to write magnificient pieces about magic moonlit scenes...

The Ways of Life

"The Ways of Life"

Markers on paper, 14 Jan 1984

The decision had been taken the previous year: Painting was over (see "Polyforms"). However, the itch hadn't gone. A few months later I picked a box of markers and started playing with them, drawing stone-like structures. Then I inserted some fluid shapes that I would develop more fully 20 years later. Quite self-explanatory, the resulting picture was satisfactory enough for me, although somewhat unnerving to the viewer...

Lava Rock

"Lava rock"
Watercorlor on paper, 26 May 2004

I rarely paint to copy reality. I prefer to imagine small details that usually are part of a whole: stones, grass, ponds, individual trees... Of course they are just interpretations, most of them abstract, experiments off the shore where creativity lurks, rather than the much more walked, safe standard bays ...

Stone candles

"Stone candles"

Watercolor on paper, 14 Aug. 2007

Interesting surrealist contrast between what we know and what we see. Candles that we know are light, warm, soft. These are solid, dark and cold.
We can create concepts of things non existing, and still give them a place in our world, independently of its convenience... just because we can.

The pulse of Gaia

"The pulse of Gaia"

Acrylic, washed ink and pen on paper, 27 Dec. 1977

"The pulse of Gaia"
Computer vectorial design, ca. 1995

The planet as a living entity was popularized by J. E. Lovelock in 1979 in his book "Gaia, a new look at life on Earth". At that time though there was a widely spread belief in Mother Earth having a soul and being connected with all living beings dwelling on it. Many ancient cultures had that belief in fact, and the young generations in the 60's and 70's moved near these ancient myths looking for new values to adhere on.

Synchronicity works in mysterious ways. The idea of our planet as a living body was present in my mind since early 70's, so I wanted to express that extraordinary concept in the first sketch above. Mountains are correlated with the heart-beat pulses below them, while the omni-present sun gives its energy to the whole. The title was decided before Lovelock's book edition.

Twenty years later I made a computer-aid version (second image), as part of a computer-designed book that will be shown in this blog later on.
