Wind of time

"Wind of time"
Pencil on paper, 15 Aug. 2005

This is the only surrealist pencil drawing I have made so far. I used my right hand as a model while sketching with the left hand, a quite interesting exercise... I wanted to represent the awakening of consciousness among the adversities of this space-time dimension.

Sefarad

"Sefarad"

Watercolor on paper, 27 Mar. 2007

Sefarad was the name given by ancient Spanish Jews to their homeland, today's Spain and Portugal. They were known as Sefardites, and even today their descendants all over the world speak the old Sefardite language, similar to ancient Spanish, that still can be understood today by Spanish-speaking people. The first Jew families settled in the Iberian Peninsula about II A.D., along with Roman colonization... until the XVI century, when most Jews were ejected from Spain. Many had the hope that one day they would return to their beloved Sefarad. Still today a number of Sefardite Jews keep the keys of the homes their ancestors left several centuries ago.

Sefarad became then a ghost land, a memory, a handicapped territory. Some historians argue that Spain's history would have been much different if Jews had not been ejected and forced to immigrate to other European countries, where their influence was decisive for the prosperity of their new home lands.

I wanted to portrait the old Sefarad land and the homes abandoned by their inhabitants, a single mass of ruined structures where some features can still be hardly distinguished.

You can hear in this link an ancient Sefardite love song, "Noches, Noches", as sound track.

Watchers

"Watchers"

Watercolor on paper, 8 Jul. 2004

While watching a sport event, a concert, etc., sometimes the TV cameras focus on the crowd, at some individual faces staring in awe to whatever is going on in front of them. It's an interesting fact that watching those faces you also become more involved with the spectacle, by sympathy and empathy, and somehow the show becomes more meaningful for you.

Faces, people, is what actually our world is made of. People is what gives meaning to our lives, and hence human relations is the only thing that really matters in the end.

I made these anonymous faces as part of larger unfinished (euphemism for failed) project, investigating the dramatic effects of zenithal lighting on human bodies. These are made with single brush strokes directly on the paper, without sketching, similar to traditional Chinese paints and writing.

Island of light

"Island of light"
Watercolor on paper, 3 Mar. 2007

As most of the people, I feel moved by sunsets, when the sun rays pass through grass blades and tree leaves creating beautiful light effects. When I was young I used to go the park near my home in Madrid just to watch the setting sun playing with high clouds and misty horizons. I tried then to memorize the details and the colours to make painted versions of what I saw that day. This is one of the latter ones, painted as usual without previous sketching.

Near and far

"Near and far"
Ink, pen and watercolor on paper, 24 Nov. 1977

Sometimes an image comes to my mind, as a finished paint arrived from the future to beg me to put it on paper. In those days I felt happy because the girl that I would marry the following year had just returned from a long trip that had kept her away for several months. The image of a tree with a sun behind, as touching each other, came to my mind as my next little project, and didn't go away until I made it real. Somehow it represented my world by then, with the promise of a completely different future, as it was.
